The Office of Instruction and Academic Acceleration is responsible for leadership throughout the Maryland State Department of Education to directly assist 24 local school systems accelerate the achievement of all students and eliminate the achievement gaps for minority and low income students statewide within five years.

Maryland's plan to accelerate student achievement and eliminate achievement gaps among sub-groups of students in Maryland public schools.

The duties of the Office of Instruction and Academic Acceleration include the following:

 

·        Supports the State Superintendent of Schools in managing all aspects of the Department’s public education program responsibilities within the Maryland State Department of Education and within all 24 public school systems.

·        Leads the implementation of the state Strategic Plan, including activities with the Divisions of Instruction, Special Education and Early Intervention, Career Technology and Adult Learning, and Student and School Services.

·        Conducts the education activities relating to the implementation and compliance with the state Bridge to Excellence Act and the federal No Child Left Behind Act.

·        Leads the state level activities for implementation of the Maryland Public Charter Schools Act.

·        Coordinates the development of the public education budget for the Department.

·        Coordinates the education reporting for the state’s Managing for Results annual report to the Department of Budget and Management.
