Overview
  

The Office of Academic Policy coordinates the development of new state action in areas ranging from instructional improvement to assessment, and works with federal initiatives such as the No Child Left Behind Act mandates. 

Within the Office of Academic Policy, the Communications and Strategic Planning Office provides timely information about state educational initiatives to schools, school districts, the public, and the media. Through a wide variety of written communications, Internet sites, and video technology, timely information is available on a full range of educational subjects.

Maryland Ranks #2 in the Nation on Advanced Placement Exams

The duties of the Office of Academic Policy include the following:

  • Assisting the State Superintendent of Schools in policy development
  • Implementing a departmental communication plan to increase understanding of the value of public education and the Department's role in improving schools among the public, legislators, business and civic leaders, parents, and the news media.
  • Providing regular and consistent information to the news media relating to department policies and programs through news releases, telephone contacts, and meetings
  • Developing strategies and creating materials for departmental marketing events and providing materials in support of events involving the Governor, State Board of Education, and State Superintendent of Schools
  • Publishing statewide newsletters and other publications
  • Advising on the editing and production of major Department publications
