Overview
  
This office oversees and coordinates the responsibilities and activities of the Audit Office; the Office of Information Technology; the Division of Certification and Accreditation; and the Division of Planning, Results, and Information Management.
In Focus
Certification and Accreditation
Certifies teachers, specialists and administrators employed in public and private schools, other state institutions and the general public.
The duties of this office include, but are not limited to, the following:
  • Assists the State Superintendent of Schools in discharge of administrative responsibilities for the Maryland State Department of Education
  • Serves as the Department's Fair Employment Compliance Officer
  • Provides direct supervision to the Audit Office and the Internal Auditor
  • Provides general supervision and sign-off authority for personnel actions
  • Provides immediate supervision to the heads of several divisions and offices
  • Provides coordination and guidance on topics and situations related to public libraries and rehabilitation services
  • Participates in oversight and preparation of MSDE's budget
  • Approves budget realignments, discretionary grant awards, departmental policy, major requisitions, and out-of-state travel for the entire department.
  • Assists the State Superintendent in developing short and long range plans for the improvement of educational programs
  • Reviews and critiques proposed legislation and departmental testimony on legislation
  • Collaborates with the Principal Counsel of Educational Affairs Division of the Attorney General's Office on legal issues
  • Collaborates with other state agencies to carry out the department's mission
  • Collaborates with representatives from higher education on collective projects
  • Assists local superintendents in the interpretation of state laws and State Board of Education regulations
  • Represents the State Superintendent and MSDE in a variety of professional meetings
  • Performs other duties as assigned by the State Superintendent
  • Interacts with members of the legislature on educational issues including pending legislation, budgets, and studies
