The Division includes the Correctional Education Program and four additional branches: The Adult Education and Literacy Services Branch includes two sections: Adult Instructional Services and GED Testing. There are three branches within Career and Technology Education: Career and Technology Education Instruction, Career and Technology Education Student and Assessment Services, and Career and Technology Education Systems.
Adult Education and Literacy Services Branch
The Adult Education and Literacy Services Branch works with local education agencies to provide adult basic and secondary education programs and services. These agencies include: public school systems, community colleges, literacy councils, libraries, correctional institutions, rehabilitation centers, and community based organizations.
Career and Technology Education
The Career and Technology Education (CTE) branches provide leadership and technical assistance to ensure excellence in the comprehensive statewide system of career and technology education. That system offers programs and services in 16 community colleges and 24 local school systems, including high schools and career centers. The CTE system is governed by the State Board of Education. The Maryland State Department of Education works closely with the Maryland Higher Education Commission to provide a seamless educational system for all Marylanders.
Correctional Education Program
The Correctional Education Program provides educational programs and library services to residents of the Division of Correction and the Patuxent Institution. Direct services are provided in adult basic education and secondary education in the eleven correctional institutions and the pre-release system. Occupational programs, focusing on job training, non-occupational programs, focusing on transition skills, and advanced education opportunities are offered on a limited basis in selected institutions. Correctional libraries meet the informational, personal, and recreational needs of the residents.
