BALTIMORE (May 9, 2008)--The following is a calendar for Maryland Schools Superintendent Dr. Nancy S. Grasmick beginning the week of May 12, 2008.
Monday, May 12
Service Learning Recognition Dinner, 4:00 p.m.
Dr. Grasmick will bring greetings to welcome Maryland students and teachers being honored at the Maryland Service-Learning Recognition Dinner. During the celebration, 44 Student Service Stars will be recognized for extraordinary contributions to their communities through service-learning. Service-learning is a teaching method that combines meaningful service to the community with curriculum-based learning. Maryland is the first state in the nation to require high school students to engage in service-learning activities as a condition of graduation.

68th Annual McCormick Unsung Heroes Awards Banquet, 6:00 p.m.
Dr. Grasmick, and more than 700 city and county officials, school administrators, coaches and families, and Herman Boone, retired football coach of the T.C. Williams High School Titans immortalized in the Disney movie “Remember the Titans,” will attend the Awards Banquet. A total of 119 high school senior boys and girls, two of whom will be honored as the 2008 Unsung Heroes scholarship winners, have been chosen to represent 73 Baltimore City and County public, private, parochial and independent schools.

Tuesday, May 13
Kids Helping Kids Awards Ceremony, 10:00 a.m.
Dr. Grasmick will attend awards ceremony. In conjunction with The Maryland Food Bank, students throughout the state of Maryland will be ceremoniously recognized for their benevolence of food collection for the Harvest for the Hungry Campaign during the “KHK Awards Ceremony.” The campaign provides students with the opportunity to learn about hunger while collecting food for their local food bank. The food banks then distribute the food to children in need across the state.

Wednesday, May 14
Groundbreaking and Rededication Ceremonies, 10:00 a.m.
Dr. Grasmick will bring greetings at the groundbreaking and reception for James M. Bennett High School. Immediately following, Dr. Grasmick will attend the rededication ceremony and tour of Prince Street Elementary School.

Thursday, May 15
Council of American Private Education (CAPE), 8:00 a.m.
Dr. Grasmick will deliver greetings during breakfast ceremony to the Maryland Association of Nonpublic Special Education Facilities (MANSEF). MANSEF is a non-profit organization including over 90 nonpublic special education schools which approved by the Maryland State Department of Education, located throughout Maryland to promote quality services for children and youth with disabilities. The majority of Maryland students attending nonpublic special education programs attend MANSEF schools.

Dictionary Project, 1:00 p.m.
Dr. Grasmick will attend the Rotary Dictionary Project event, which distributes dictionaries to every 3rd grade student throughout the State of Maryland.

Blue Ribbon School Visit, 9:00 a.m.
Dr. Grasmick will visit Broadneck Elementary School to applaud the school’s Blue Ribbon Award designation. Broadneck Elementary Schools is now eligible to become a National Blue Ribbon School.

75th Anniversary of School Celebration, 2:00 p.m.
Dr. Grasmick et al., will attend the celebration honoring the 75th Anniversary of Seventh District Elementary School in Baltimore County. In September, 1932, eight small schools, dating back to the 1800s, were consolidated into the original Butler Stone facility that became known as Seventh District Elementary. This facility served the community well until the unfortunate fire, on August 30, 1970.
