The Maryland State Board of Education will hold its regularly scheduled monthly meeting Tuesday, March 25 and Wednesday, March 26, at the Maryland State Department of Education, 200 W. Baltimore Street, Baltimore. The meeting will be held in the 7th floor Board Room. Both sessions will begin at 9 a.m. Items on this month's agenda include the following:
TUESDAY, FEBRUARY 26
9:30 a.m. Action Item: Alternative Governance Proposals
The State Board is scheduled to act on alternative governance proposals for nine schools in Prince George's county. Under the federal No Child Left Behind Act, schools that have consistently been able to make their academic progress goals and are at the end of the School Improvement process must make dramatic changes in an effort to reverse course. Prince George's County will come before the Board with proposals for four elementary schools, four middle schools, and a high school.
2:45 p.m. Action Item: State Plan for Adult Education
The State Board is scheduled to act on plans for extending MSDE's adult education and family literacy plan for Maryland. To access federal funds, Maryland must extend its existing State plan for one additional year while the federal Workforce Investment Act is being reauthorized.
3 p.m. Action Item: SEED School
The State Board is scheduled to act on articles of incorporation and by-laws for the SEED School of Maryland, set to open in August 2008.
The statewide residential school for disadvantaged youth will be the second launched by the SEED organization, following on the success of a school in Washington, DC.
WEDNESDAY, MARCH 26
9:25 a.m. Action Item: State Plan for Career and Technology Education
The State Board will be asked to act on a five-year plan for Career and Technology Education (CTE), which will take Maryland's plan through 2012. Approval is necessary for federal funding under the Carl D. Perkins Career and Technical Education Improvement Act of 2006.
10:40 a.m. School Readiness Report
State Board members will hear the latest results of MSDE's survey of student work for entering kindergartners. Maryland's trendsetting report assesses new student abilities in various academic, physical, and social categories.
