Maryland Students and Teachers Honored for Service and Leadership
Students and teachers recognized for service-learning

BALTIMORE, MD (May 12, 2008)

The Maryland State Department of Education (MSDE) will honor Maryland students and teachers tonight for their service and leadership in the field of service-learning at Maryland's Service-Learning Recognition Dinner at the Turf Valley Resort and Conference Center.

Forty-four Student Service Stars will be recognized for extraordinary contributions to their communities through service-learning and for their service and leadership in promoting service among their peers.

"I am proud of these students who have gone beyond their district's service-learning plan, giving hundreds, and in some cases, in excess of 1,000 hours of service to their communities," said Nancy S. Grasmick, State Schools Superintendent. "And, I'm impressed by the dedication of the honored teachers for their wonderful ability to create exemplary service-learning experiences for their students and provide expertise to their peers."

The 14 teachers to be inducted as Service-Learning Fellows will join nearly 170 veteran Fellows who represent all 24 Maryland school districts and promote high quality service-learning throughout the state. Service-Learning Fellows share their expertise by training other teachers in service-learning, mentoring their peers, working with local service-learning teams, and writing curricula.

In addition, two principals of the year will be honored for endorsing high quality service-learning which is vital to maintaining quality programs. These principal leaders support teachers, ensure program accountability, and promote high quality service learning, as well as serve as leaders in their school system, state, and beyond.
