On April 22, 2008, Governor Martin O'Malley issued an Executive Order to establish the Maryland Partnership for Children in Nature. This Executive Order called for a review of current environmental education efforts in Maryland schools, including the identification of model outdoor field and learning experiences that are integrated as part of the regular curriculum.
Because each school setting is unique, a number of possible environmental education models have emerged around the state. In addition, the focus on STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering & Math), technology literacy, and the environmental challenges unique to Maryland have molded program offering and structures.
This index summarizes a variety of model programs as identified by Maryland School System Environmental Education Coordinators as of August 1, 2009. We will continue to post links to exceptional programs as they evolve.
