Standard 6.0 Environmental Science
Students will use scientific skills and processes to explain the interactions of environmental factors (living and non-living) and analyze their impact from a local to a global perspective.
Introduction Clarification |
Topic A. Natural Resources and Human Needs |
Indicator 1. Recognize and explain how natural resources found in Maryland are used by humans to meet basic needs. |
Objectives 1. Identify and compare Maryland's renewable and nonrenewable natural resources. 2. Describe how humans use renewable natural resources, such as plants, soil, water, animals. 3. Describe how humans use nonrenewable natural resources, such as oil, coal, natural gas, minerals, including metals.
|
Topic B. Environmental Issues |
| Indicator 1. Recognize and explain that decisions influencing the use of natural resources may have benefits, drawbacks, unexpected consequences, and tradeoffs. |
Objectives 1. Identify and describe personal and community behaviors that waste natural resources and/or cause environmental harm and those behaviors that maintain or improve the environment.
2. Identify and describe that individuals and groups assess and manage risk to the environment differently. |
| Indicator 2. Recognize and describe that consequences may occur when Earth's natural resources are used. |
Objectives
- Explain how human activities may have positive consequences on the natural environment.
- Recycling centers
- Native plantings
- Good farming practices
- Explain how human activities may have a negative consequence on the natural environment.
- Damage or destruction done to habitats
Air, water, and land pollution
- Identify and describe that an environmental issue affects individuals and groups differently.

Natural Resources and Human Needs
Ø Mining in Maryland - Unit by MD Dept of the Environment In this project-based and inquiry-based unit, students explore the economic and environmental issues associated with the mining industry in Maryland. - what resources are mined - importance to our society - impacts on the environment - solutions that are currently being used - roles of the federal and state government
Ø Renewable Energy Students will investigate a variety of renewable energy resources, as well as the benefits and drawbacks of each.

ENVIRONMENTAL ISSUES
Ø Social Tradeoffs Students are presented with a scenario in which they have inherited a section of forestland. To make and evaluate decisions by weighing the benefits and drawbacks of each alternative.
Ø Global Climate Change Predict the effect of increased CO2 on wheat yield.
Ø Energy Sources and Use Renewable and nonrenewable sources of energy; investigate a variety of renewable energy resources and compare the benefits and drawbacks of each.
Ø Engineering Solutions Use Internet resources to explore the side effects of technology; to design, implement and evaluate solutions related to the problem of waste disposal.
Ø The Roots of Trash Identify the various natural resources used to produce common items; understand how people use science and technology to produce those items.
Ø Garbage 2 Recycling Problems of waste disposal and how recycling can help to reduce the amount of waste we create
