Matthew Johnston, Social Studies Teacher
Frederick High School, Frederick County

Matthew Johnston began his career teaching English through the Americorps VISTA program in New York. In Frederick, Maryland, he teaches high school social studies. Taking inspiration from the great "change agents" of history, Matthew strives to embrace diversity and promote tolerance to "make the world he wants to live in," both in the school and community. Toward this goal he advises students as they work on several initiatives, provides staff development, and facilitates community events. Matthew's leadership launched the Frederick High School Connections! Club, earning the Maryland Department of Education's Minority Student Achievement Award and the MACRO Peace-Crafters Award.
