Model Program
In 1994, educators asked the Maryland Student Service Alliance (MSSA)/Maryland State Department of Education (MSDE) for standards to help them improve school-based service-learning. They also asked for examples of excellent service-learning that they could replicate. With a grant from the Corporation for National Service, the MSSA/MSDE produced Maryland's Best Practices: An Improvement Guide for School-Based Service-Learning, based on interviews with teachers all over the state. We then selected ten teachers whose service-learning programs met these "Best Practices." These teachers devised our Model Programs, created replication guides for their model programs, and then trained teachers from sixty Maryland schools to become our Replication Sites.
