Since 1951, National Engineers Week has helped to increase public awareness and appreciation of the engineering profession and to celebrate the accomplishments of engineers.  Join us at the Engineers Club, or their locations as noted.

GIRL POWER: THE CHANGING FACE OF STEM event March 14, 2010.   This is a career exploration activity and information sharing event with our sponsors and supporters to increase the participation and employment of diverse women in STEM careers. 

Northrop Grumman Foundation's Earthwatch Educator Program Now Accepting Applications The Northrop Grumman Foundation partnered with Earthwatch Institute last year to develop two expeditions that provide educators with a hands-on professional development opportunity, which will ultimately impact students' math and science education and help create the next generation of environmental ambassadors.  Teachers can choose between two missions: one in the Bahamas, the other in the Arctic. The STEM Equity Pipeline, funded by a grant from the National Science Foundation, strives to build the capacity of the formal education community to implement research based approaches proven to increase the participation and completion of females, including those with disabilities, in STEM education.

 

For Students: 

 

Geography From Space Contest online from November 15 - 21. In recognition of National Geography Awareness Week, the National Air and Space Museum is presenting this fun contest, students can learn about geography and remote sensing of the Earth by trying to identify geographic features on images from various satellites and the International Space Station.  The contest and registration can be accessed at online.  Prior to Nov. 15 students can practice there on previous years’ quizzes. 

 

Saturday Morning Science at Towson University. These one hour programs are targeted for students in grades 3-8 and
their families and are open to all.  The programs are free and no registration is required.  They are held in Smith Hall - Room 326 on the Towson University campus. Programs begin at 10:00 am and are repeated at 12:00 noon.

State Superintendent of Schools and former Congresswoman Helen Bentley launched a new website highlighting career and technology opportunities at the Port of Baltimore.  This website is designed to help high school students and their teachers look at the numerous technologies and career opportunities at the Helen Delich Bentley Port of Baltimore.

 

 

NASA Announces Lunar Exploration Competition for Students.  NASA's Exploration Systems Mission Directorate is now accepting proposals from teams of undergraduate and graduate students for the inaugural Lunabotics Mining Competition. The event will be held at the Astronaut Hall of Fame near NASA's Kennedy Space Center, FL in May. Full competition proposals can include a request for up to $5,000 to cover designing, building, and travel expenses. NASA anticipates funding the first 10 approved team requests. Participants in the competition will design and build excavation systems that could be used for future lunar exploration. To learn more about the competition and to apply visit online. 

 

 

The Sounds of Progress: The Changing Role of Girls and Women in Science and Engineering, is now available for listening.

 

eCYBERMISSION is the Army's free virtual science fair for students in grades six through nine.  This program encourages students to explore real-world applications of science, math and technology.  Students on winning teams can win up to $8,000 each in U.S. EE Savings Bonds.

 

 

Junior FIRST LEGO Leagues introduces students ages 6 – 9 to the excitement of science and technology.  FIRST LEGO League offers students ages 9 – 14 the opportunity to design, build and program robots using LEGO MINDSTORMS. FIRST Robotics Competition is a high school varsity sport for the mind that combines science and mathematics with technology. For more information on these programs visit online.
