The School Library Media Office provides leadership, coordination, and support services in the implementation of the Standards for School Library Media Programs in Maryland and the integration of information literacy skills throughout content areas using the School Library Media State Curriculum.

Accepted by the Maryland State Board of Education October 26, 2010, the School Library Media SC was developed by the Office of Instructional Technology and School Library Media and addresses the component processes associated with becoming information literate and incorporates both the previous Maryland Learning Outcomes for School Library Media and the national standards from the AASL Standards for the 21st-Century Learner.

The Baltimore Library Project (Weinberg Foundation)

MSDE is proud to partner with the Weinberg Foundation on the Baltimore Library Project. For the month of March, MSDE is supporting the Library Project book drive. Please contribute a new children's book (ages 3-12) suitable for a school library – books may be dropped into labeled bins in the Baltimore and Liberty Street lobbies. An effective school library media program requires certified library media specialists and adequate support staff with appropriate skills. The library media specialist is an essential partner in providing instruction and services that support the total education program of the school.

Empowering Learners: Guidelines for School Library Media Programs (AASL, 2009) defines the roles and responsibilities of the school library media specialist which are reflected in the Standards for School Library Media Programs in Maryland.
