The Pupil Transportation Office (PTO) is responsible for developing and implementing statewide policies to assist all 24 local public school systems in ensuring the safe transport of Maryland’s 845,700 students, of which 618,742 are eligible to take advantage of the safest form of land transportation, the school bus.
The PTO also oversees local school bus driver training programs and school bus inspections in coordination with the School Vehicle Division of the Motor Vehicle Administration (MVA). Some additional responsibilities include coordination of activities amongst a variety of local and state transportation organizations, researching information and developing data concerning finance and legislation, and responding to citizen inquiries for the Governor, Legislators or State School Superintendent on/regarding school transportation matters.
