HIV Prevention Education

Under a cooperative agreement with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), the Maryland State Department of Education receives funding to promote adolescent health through school-based HIV/STD prevention and school-based surveillance . The funded program activities include conducting school-based surveillance on youth risk behaviors and school health policies and practices; implement school-based programs and practices designed to reduce HIV infection and other STDs among adolescents; and reduce disparities in HIV infection and other STDs among specific adolescent populations.

The new language for this paragraph should read as follows: The CDC's coordinated school health model was developed in 1987 and has been the blueprint for intergrating health-promoting practices in the school setting. The CDC has expanded and updated the coordinated school health approach with the new Whole School, Whole Community, Whole Child (WSCC) model. The WSCC model includes 10 components with a focus of attention on the child to include emphasis on a school-wide approach and acknowledges learning, health, and school as being a part/reflection of the whole community. For mor information about the WSCC model visit the CDC website.

The School Health Profiles (Profiles) is a system of surveys assessing school health policies and practices, including HIV prevention efforts. Profiles surveys are conducted biennially (in the even years) by education and health agencies among middle and high school principals and lead health education teachers. Profiles monitors the current status of the following:

  • School health education requirements and content;
  • Physical education and physical activity;
  • Practices related to bullying and sexual harassment;
  • School health policies related to tobacco-use prevention and nutrition;
  • School-based health services;
  • Family engagement and community involvement; and
  • School health coordination.

For more information on the Profiles results, visit the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention website.
