The Maryland State Department of Education (MSDE) convened the
Standards and Frameworks Validation Committee: Mathematics (SFVC Math) to review, refine, and develop mathematics standards that promote a clear and consistent progression from PreK through high school. The SFVC Math is excited to share the revised standards with Maryland stakeholders.
After the revised standards are adopted, MSDE Mathematics Branch will develop Companion Guides for each grade level that will provide more detailed information about each standard, including connections to prior and subsequent learning. The Companion Guides will also provide more extensive examples, learning opportunities that students should engage in, and connections to modeling, reasoning, and financial literacy.
Grade-Level Standards
ELEMENTARY SCHOOL
The revisions to the PreK – grade 5 standards aim to clarify expectations, emphasize specific strategies and representations, and strengthen foundational numeracy skills. At some grade levels, there are shifts or additions in order to provide a more cohesive progression across grade levels.
MIDDLE SCHOOL
The primary goal of the Grade 6 – 8 mathematics standards revisions is to clarify expectations, elevate fluency goals with a focus on algebraic thinking, and create a more cohesive geometry experience across the middle grades. These updates are designed to build a strong foundation for the integrated algebra sequence by deepening student engagement with essential algebra-readiness concepts, particularly in Grades 7 and 8.
HIGH SCHOOL
The revised high school mathematics standards reflect a shift to an Integrated Algebra sequence consisting of two full-year courses that intentionally blend algebra, geometry, and statistics. A key goal of the standards review was to support deeper conceptual understanding by identifying essential, widely applicable mathematical concepts, reducing redundancy, and refining the scope of the content to emphasize reasoning and problem solving. The standards outline a foundational progression of mathematical college- and career-readiness designed to ensure all students are equipped to successfully enter and pursue any secondary math pathway.
Public Comment
Your feedback is invaluable in ensuring these standards meet the needs of all students, educators, and stakeholders.
MSDE is soliciting public comment on the proposed revisions to the Maryland College and Career Ready Standard for Mathematics for PreK- Integrated Algebra. Please submit comments by 12:00 p.m. on May 28, 2025, via
