School Counselor

Please be prepared to submit documentation verifying that you have met the requirements from one of the options below:


Option I

Completion of a Maryland-approved program approved to lead to licensure in School Counseling, including three semester hours of special education coursework.


Option II

  1. A master’s degree in school counseling or school guidance and counseling; and

  2. A valid National Board of Certified Counselors (NBCC) certificate; and

  3. Three semester hours of special education coursework ; and

  4. Two years of satisfactory performance as a teacher or school counselor in a school setting.


Option III

  1. A master’s degree in school counseling or school guidance and counseling; and

  2. A valid National Board Certificate issued by the National Board for Professional Teaching Standards in School Counseling; and

  3. Three semester hours of special education coursework .


Option IV

  1. A master’s degree in school counseling or school guidance and counseling leading to certification in the state in which it is located; and

  2. Three semester hours of special education coursework ; and

  3. Two years of satisfactory performance as a teacher or school counselor or 500 clock hours in a supervised practicum in school counseling.


Option V

  1. A master’s degree in school counseling or school guidance and counseling from a program approved by the Council for Accreditation of Counseling and Related Educational Programs; and

  2. Three semester hours of special education coursework .


Option VI

  1. A master’s degree; and

  2. A valid, professional school counseling license issued by another state; and

  3. Three semester hours of special education coursework ; and

  4. Verification of at least 27 months of satisfactory performance as a school counselor.
