Why did you choose this CTE Program of Study?
Ever since I was little, I have always been interested in hair and skin care. I talked to my counselor and found out I could take cosmetology while in high school so I thought why not. It was the best decision I could make. My classes are fun and exciting, and I am learning skills that I will use for life.
How does your CTE Program fit in your future education and career plans?
I’ve learned so much in my cosmetology class. I have learned ways to determine if a customer suffers from scalp, skin, hair disorders or diseases. Having this knowledge helps me to better style the client’s hair.
What Academic subjects are important to your success in your CTE program?
Three classes that have been so important to help me in my career choice have been chemistry, geometry, and Principles of Engineering. Most people think you just cut hair, but it is really more than that. Chemistry has helped me understand the interactions of different chemicals. No one wants to get their hair colored and have it turn out a different color than what they expected.
What is the most exciting thing you have learned or have done in your CTE program?
We are learning something new every day. I like the fact that we learn a skill and then practice it, so I keep getting better in everything that I do. I especially like taking what I learned in the classroom and using it in the real world. I work as a shampoo tech in a local salon which reaffirms that I have chosen the right program for me.
Explain how it is possible to fit both your required high school courses and your CTE program into your schedule?
Work with your guidance counselor to develop your four-year plan to ensure you can get all the classes in that you need to graduate and be able to take the electives you want to take. Make sure you do well in all classes to be able to earn the credit and not have to retake the class.
Describe any teachers or relationships that supported you?
Mrs. Badwak is my cosmetology teacher, and she is always there to answer my questions and give me the support that I need. She encourages me to do my best and to never give up.
What would you tell an incoming freshman or a middle school student about CTE?
I would tell an incoming freshman to take a CTE program. With so many choices, I am sure they can find one that focuses in on their interests in what they plan on doing in the future. CTE helps to expand your knowledge base and prepare you to go out into the real working world. CTE classes allow you to get the real feeling of the field or industry. I would recommend that all students try a CTE program.
