What makes us unique?
EXCEL Academy Public Charter School is a Primary Years Programme International Baccalaureate candidate school. By choosing to implement the PYP, EXCEL Academy is poised to develop students’ academic, social and emotional well-being, focusing on international-mindedness and strong personal values.
EXCEL Academy provides a literacy and culturally rich environment; maintains small class sizes at all grade levels; employs highly qualified and motivated teachers; and institutes student support systems comprised of staff and parents/guardians working cooperatively to create a safe and orderly environment.
EXCEL’s approach to providing a high-quality learning environment is built upon four pillars:
- College preparation;
- Cultural arts;
- Character development; and,
- Community partnership.
Co- and extracurricular programs are an integral part of student life at EXCEL. With offerings such as Spanish, cultural and performing arts, robotics team, National Junior Honor Society, as well as other academic and athletic enrichment experiences, EXCEL Academy Public Charter School will enhance every one of its students’ educational journeys.
EXCEL Academy has an extended day learning program that offers homework help, recreational activities, snacks and meals, and specials (dance, art, Tae Kwon Do).
Community:
EXCEL offers a monthly Family Market in partnership with its operator, Sowing Empowerment and Economic Development, Inc. (SEED) and the Capital Area Food Bank during the school year. The Family Market provides nonperishable food and fresh produce for EXCEL families and families in the surrounding community.
In partnership with SEED and the Children’s Defense Fund, EXCEL offers Freedom School each summer, a research-based and multicultural program model that supports K-12 scholars and their families through five essential components: high quality academic and character-building enrichment; parent and family involvement; civic engagement and social action; intergenerational servant leadership development; and nutrition, health and mental health.
EXCEL’s annual Evening at the Gallery showcases EXCEL students’ talents in visual and performing arts. The event is open to the community.
