Service-Learning Public Agency Contact Information

Each of the 24 school systems in Maryland, as well as the Maryland School for the Blind, the Maryland School for the Deaf, the SEED School of Maryland, and the Juvenile Services Education Program (JSEP), uniquely tailor the service-learning graduation requirement to meet the needs of their students, schools, and communities.

  • Many public agencies choose to incorporate service-learning into instruction during the school day as a form of experiential and civic education. These projects meet existing curriculum goals and objectives while allowing students to apply their academic knowledge to real-world situations. By completing the expectations of a given course in which service-learning is a component, a student has earned a predetermined number of hours toward the service-learning graduation requirement.

  • Independent service-learning experiences, outside of school hours, are part of many public agency plans. To receive credit toward the graduation requirement, service-learning activities that are completed independently by students in the community must be approved by the identified school staff, in accordance with guidelines from that public agencies' service-learning coordinator.
