Recognizing that quality educators are key to student success, the Blueprint for Maryland’s Future seeks to re-establish the teaching profession. The Blueprint specifically calls for the implementation of a career ladder with increases in salaries for teachers on various steps in the ladder, while also increasing the rigor and depth of teacher preparation programs in an effort to attract and retain the highest performing teachers.
Recognizing that quality educators are key to student success, the Maryland State Department of Education (MSDE) is implementing a new Blueprint for Maryland’s Future program to attract and retain National Board Certified Teachers (NBCT) in the State’s low performing schools. The Blueprint law increases the salary by $10,000 of National Board Certified educators who are actively teaching in Maryland public schools. In addition, National Board Certified Teachers working in a low performing school will receive an additional $7,000 annually.
The Maryland State Department of Education (MSDE) and the Maryland Higher Education Commission (MHEC) are developing a joint plan that outlines how teacher preparation programs and training will be carried out by June 15, 2022 and then prior to September 30, 2022, MSDE and MHEC will work with the teacher preparation programs at institutes of higher education to determine if the current programs are in line with the Blueprint.
Additionally, the MBOE and the Professional Standards Teaching and Education Board (PSTEB) will adopt regulations addressing the requirements for teacher training practicums and several other areas related to teacher preparation programs.
