Maryland Home Instruction (Home Schooling)
Students who are participating in Maryland Home Instruction are not required to meet the Maryland graduation requirement of engaging in at least 75 hours of service-learning.
If a student would like to engage in service-learning and earn hours that potentially might be accepted by a school system in which s/he might enroll in the future, s/he could:
- check with that local education agency’s service-learning contact to determine if this is possible,
- review the school system’s plan for service-learning,
- and identify forms, materials, or resources s/he could be using while s/he prepares, performs, reflects on, and documents service-learning.
Charter Schools
Maryland Charter School students obtain Maryland Public School diplomas upon successful completion of all Maryland graduation requirements. The charter school in which students are enrolled should have a plan in place for helping students meet the 75 hour service-learning graduation requirement.
Please check with your charter school for details.

Private Schools
Students enrolled in private schools in Maryland do not receive a Maryland Public School diploma and are not required to complete the Maryland Public School service-learning graduation requirement.
Many private schools have created requirements for students to engage with the community and participate in service projects.
