Superintendent I
This license qualifies an individual to be assigned as a county deputy superintendent, assistant superintendent, or associate superintendent. Please be prepared to submit documentation verifying that you qualify for one of the options below:
Option I: Traditional Route
(1) A master's, or higher degree
(2) Completion of one of the following:
(a) A Maryland-approved program which leads to certification as a superintendent;
(b) An out of state program that leads to certification as a superintendent in the state in which the institution is located; or
(c) 45 semester hours of graduate course work, including a minimum of 15 semester hours in education administration. This may include coursework earned as part of the master’s degree.
(3) 27 months of satisfactory teaching performance or satisfactory performance as a certified specialist in a PreK—12 setting.
(4) 24 months of satisfactory administrative or supervisory experience in a PreK—12 setting.
Option II: Reciprocal Route
(1) Valid professional state certificate in a like or comparable area
(2) Verification of 36 months of satisfactory performance as a deputy, associate, or assistant superintendent during the past 7 years.
Superintendent II
This license qualifies an individual to be a county superintendent. Please be prepared to submit documentation verifying that you qualify for one of the options below:
Option I: Traditional Route
(1) A master's, or higher degree
(2) Completion of one of the following:
(a) A Maryland-approved program which leads to certification as a superintendent to include course work covering public school administration, supervision, and methods of teaching;
(b) An out of state program that leads to certification as a superintendent in the state in which the institution is located, to include course work covering public school administration, supervision, and methods of teaching; or
(c) 60 semester hours of graduate course work, including a minimum of 24 semester hours in education administration, to include course work covering public school administration, supervision, and methods of teaching. This may include coursework earned as part of the master’s degree.
(3) 27 months of satisfactory teaching performance or satisfactory performance as a certified specialist in a PreK—12 setting.
(4) 24 months of satisfactory administrative or supervisory experience in a PreK—12 setting.
Option II: Reciprocal Route
(1) Valid professional state superintendent (or comparable area) certificate
(2) Verification of 36 months of satisfactory performance as a superintendent during the past 7 years; and
(3) Verification of 2 years of graduate work to include coursework covering public school administration, supervision, and methods of teaching.
(4) Three semester hours or State-approved Continuing Professional Development (CPD) credit in special education coursework.
