What makes us unique:

Furman L. Templeton Preparatory Academy through the utilization of a year-round schooling model, provides more consistent opportunities to engage in instruction at the school level. Moreover, the year-round schedule allows the school-based teams time to utilize data to more frequently provide targeted support during the times between sessions to meet the individual needs of the students. The focus on technology allows students the opportunity to interact with hardware not current and/or relevant in many of the homes in the surrounding area. All students have the opportunity to utilize 21st century technology as students in grades 2nd-5th have their own Netbook to assist with accessing the curriculum.  Students in Pre-K-1st grades have class iPads and grade level computer labs   Our afterschool program provided by The Child First Authority includes intramural sports, academic enrichment, and fine arts activities for all students.

Community:

For many parents in the community, the school is a critical resource and support throughout the early years of their child’s life. Since 2012, we have partnered with the University of Maryland School of Social Work through the Promise Heights Initiative, to improve the educational, health and developmental outcomes of children from birth to young adult in the West Baltimore community of Upton/Druid Heights. FLTPA is one of four schools receiving the comprehensive services of this program.   The key partners of the program include: B’More for Healthy Babies, Little Flowers Early Childhood Care, YMCA Head Start, and Reading Partners.  Promise Heights also hosts two Parent University groups: one for parents of children 0-3 and one for children 3-5. These partners and structures bring continuity, considerable resources and stability to the families in the community

Mission and Vision:

Furman L. Templeton Preparatory Academy is in the Upton community endeavoring to lay the foundation for success in middle, high school, college, and the 21st century workplace for our students.   The comprehensive educational programs for students and families include a Head Start Program, Pre-K, and a kindergarten to fifth grade which creates a pipeline to support academic outcomes.   The programs within the school are designed to support the students and their families   We aim to increase the academic achievement of all students, in partnership with the community to ensure that our students have the attitudes, skills, and proficiencies needed to be successful at each of these stages.  Our mission is to accelerate the opportunities and outcomes for our children by demanding nothing, but excellence form the students, staff, and community.  The school leaders, staff, and parents at FLTPA believe that great outcomes for our students can be achieved using the Learn, Love, Live framework.  Learn:  We combine a rigorous academic curriculum with research-based instructional practices, data-driven decision-making, partnerships with community resources and technology. The school uses the latest technology to engage and motivate students and to help teachers deliver the academic experience.  Love: FLTPA actively promotes and embraces core values to help our students to resolve conflict and create a solid foundation on which to build relationships. We use the model of Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports (PBIS) to identify, adapt and sustain effective school-wide behavior support practices.  Live:  All students have the opportunity to take advantage of multiple field trips: one trip is out of state. These trips introduce our students to new environments and expose them to a broader world. The school climate is one that encourages learning, supports educator development, and parent engagement.
