Maryland Public Schools
The Code of Maryland Regulations (COMAR) is the official compilation of all administrative regulations issued by agencies of the state of Maryland.
Regulations governing the Maryland State Department of Education (MSDE) fall under Title 13A.
COMAR 13A.03.02.05 mandates that every public school student in Maryland complete at least 75 hours of service-learning.
Maryland was the first state in our nation to implement a service-learning graduation requirement. It took effect in the fall of 1993, initially impacting the graduating class of 1997.
Maryland Public Charter Schools
Students enrolled in a
Maryland Public Charter School obtain Maryland Public School diplomas upon successful completion of all Maryland graduation requirements, including 75 hours of service-learning. Please reach out to your charter school for specific details about how service-learning hours are earned at your school.
Maryland Home Instruction
Students who are participating in
Maryland Home Instruction are not required to meet the Maryland graduation requirement of engaging in at least 75 hours of service-learning.
Maryland Private Schools
Students enrolled in private schools in Maryland do not receive a Maryland Public School diploma and therefore are not required to complete the service-learning graduation requirement.
