Migrant Education Program

The goal of the Migrant Education Program is to ensure that all migrant students reach challenging academic standards and graduate with a high school diploma (or complete a GED) that prepares them for responsible citizenship, further learning, and productive employment.

Migrant Education Program in Maryland

The Migrant Education Program in Maryland is available to students who meet the definition of “migratory child”.  Migratory families move regularly in order to find work.  The largest influx of migrant students is between the months of June thru August.  Migratory families come primarily to the Eastern Shore (and throughout the State) of Maryland to seek temporary or seasonal employment in agriculture or fishing. During the summer months, there are two Summer Intercession Migrant Education Programs offered in two counties on the Eastern Shore.  One site is located in Queen Anne’s County and provides services to students in Queen Anne’s, Kent, and Northern Caroline Counties.  The second site is located in Somerset County and provides services to students in Somerset, Wicomico, and Dorchester Counties.

The Regional Summer Intercession Program in Queen Anne’s County

Migrant students from Queen Anne’s and Kent Counties are served by Queen Anne’s County Migrant Office, housed at Queen Anne’s County Board of Education.  During July, these students are served in a summer program located at Sudlersville Elementary School.  The program incorporates focused reading, math and steam instruction.  The program also builds students’ listening and speaking skills through the arts and physical education. Cheryl Cox is the Queen Anne’s County Migrant Program Supervisor. The Regional Summer Intercession Program in Somerset County

The primary purpose of the Migrant Education Program (MEP) in Somerset County is to provide academic services to the children of migrant workers in the surrounding counties. The Summer Intercession Program is located at Somerset Intermediate School and provides academic and supportive services to MEP students and their families.
