Maryland Mathematics Graduation Requirements

Enrollment Requirements

Students must enroll in a mathematics class in each year of high school.


Credit Requirements

  • B. a student who entered the 9th grade class in the 2020—2021 school year or earlier shall have earned a minimum of:
    • three credits, including one with instruction in algebra aligned with the Maryland Comprehensive Assessment for algebra and one with instruction in geometry aligned with the content standards for geometry;
  • C. students entering the 9th grade class in the 2021—2022 school year shall have earned a minimum of :
    • four credits, including one with instruction in algebra aligned with the Maryland Comprehensive Assessment for algebra and one with instruction in geometry aligned with the content standards for geometry;


Notes:

  • Maryland’s local school systems may elect to add additional mathematics credit requirements. Refer to the local school system’s website for additional information.

  • To be considered for acceptance to a school in the University System of Maryland (USM) students must have completed 4 years of mathematics, which must include Algebra I, Geometry, and Algebra II. Students who complete Algebra II before their senior year must complete a senior year mathematics course that is intensive in algebra and expands on algebra foundations developed during Algebra II.


Assessment Requirements

Students may meet the mathematics assessment graduation requirement in the following ways:

  • Achieve a passing score on the Maryland High School Assessment for Algebra I, or
  • Achieve a combined score on the Maryland High School Assessments, or
  • Satisfactorily complete an Algebra Bridge Plan for Academic Validation
